about

In October 2002, I was a year into having Netflix, and so I decided to put it to use watching horror movies. At the time, horror was a genre I had a passing interest at best in. After getting into some slashers in the ‘80s, I started to watch the genre more as I really delved into cinema in the ‘90s, but they were contemporary films, not the classics. Netflix DVD allowed me to do that. And so, an annual tradition began.

In 2004, I was starting to get my sea legs back under me as a composer. So when my Month of the Macabre began, inspiration struck. The next three years, I wrote a new horror-inspired piece each October. They would be the jumping off point for this album.

My first four October pieces, including one from 2009, previously made their way to my 2013 album, “Storytelling,” but when inspiration took hold several times in October 2012 and October 2013, a new context for them found itself. “The Cold Wind of Horror” as a concept took hold, even though the title track wouldn’t be composed until last year.

This is an album intended for listening in the month of walks amongst leaves on the ground, corn mazes and pumpkin patches, and brisk nighttime walks. Also included is my score for the 2009 short film by Mathew Timms, “Walpurgis Night,” which closes the album, and is very much of a piece, creatively-speaking, with the other tracks here.

about

Brian Skutle Kennesaw, Georgia

Brian Skutle's passion is for storytelling, be it through music, film, or creative writing, with the story dictating the medium that best brings it to life. In his music, though, it may not be a specific story that inspires him but a feeling; a sense of longing; of mystery; of tension; of serenity; of sensuality; of something beyond the humdrum normalcy of life. ... more
